1. The Poor Man’s Helicam // GoPro Hero3 Longboard 2K Cin Test

Took the Hero3 out yesterday for a quick little longboard sesh. Wanted to film on 2K 24fps to see how it would handle the high speeds. Normally, I’d never film longboarding at 24fps…but this was a test, so what the heck. Threw in a little 720p @ 120fps for those who’ve been asking for it…more on that later. I didn’t color correct this piece so you guys can see how it looks straight out of camera. Also, a little glimpse into how you can make a helicam-like shot for less than $50! Remember my GIANT MONOPOD video, yeah it’s that plus moving on a longboard…CRAZY!

Overall I’m pretty impressed, I’d normally use 1080p @ 60fps for high speed action stuff, but this actually doesn’t look too bad. The silhouetting caused by shooting into the sun is actually kinda cool, plus the blacks aren’t completely crushed which means with some color correction in post I could balance them out if I had to. You can see a little rolling shutter in the beginning of the aerial shots, but I’ll forgive that because the camera was on top of a shaky 30 foot pole, on a super windy day, while balancing on a moving longboard. I brought the pole down a bit for the rest of the shots and the rolling shutter/jello effect was completely gone! Audio sounded okay, but I didn’t include it because I shot with the waterproof back on, so it is a little more muffled than I’d like.

    More tests coming soon…next up, we’ll put 720p @ 120fps to the test. Questions/Requests? Ask ‘em on facebook.com/stephendiazproductions or stephendiaz.com/ask :)
